Vitiligo is seen in 1% of the
population. Dr Milgraum of New Jersey is a national expert on vitiligo
treatment. Dr Milgraum appeared on the Geraldo Show in 1993 to discuss
vitiligo treatment, after Michael
Jackson publicly announced that the change in his skin color was due to
vitiligo. Dr Milgraum is a member of the National Vitiligo Foundation an
organization seeking a vitiligo cure. See
National Vitiligo Foundation. Dr Milgraum was the first doctor in the
world to use a laser seeking a vitiligo cure in the early 90s.
Vitiligo present with flat white spots or patches on the skin. Vitiligo
vulgaris is the most common type and presents with a typical pattern of
pigment loss around the eyes, elbows, kneed, hands and
groin. The cause of vitiligo is unknown but it appears that the melanocytes
or pigment cells of the skin are weakened or destroyed leading to an absence
of these cells and there tan to brown color. The
skin in these areas is susceptible to sun burn and must be protected with
sunscreen when the vitiligo patient is outside.
Most physicians believe vitiligo is an autoimmune-related disorder where the
body is attacking the pigment cells. However, the actual mechanism is still
not clear though research is active in this area. In vitiligo the skin is
otherwise normal with normal texture and only the skin's color is affected.
The extent of vitiligo is quite
variable and while most affected indiduals only have small areas, others can
have full body involvement. Also, the individual course may vary where spots
may remain stable for years and then suddenly expand
or new patches may develop. The texture and other skin qualities remain
normal.

In New Jersey, Dr. Sandy Milgraum offers
several effective vitiligo treatment options in his East Brunswick offices.
Vitiligo Cure
The course and severity of pigment loss differ with each person. In many
cases, vitiligo begins in a small area. Over time, other spots may appear,
while existing spots may grow larger. It is during these flares or during
the summer months, when the vitiligo patches become more noticeable, that
patients more commonly seek vitiligo treatment or a vitiligo cure.
Effective Vitiligo Treatments are available and we in NJ Can Help
Vitiligo is no longer difficult to treat. After a full medical evaluation
including blood work to ensure there are no contributing diseases, we
commence our NJ vitiligo treatment program. We recommend nutritional support
to encourage new pigment formation. Topical ointments are prescribed to
stimulate the melanocytes to re-grow.
One new cream developed in
Germany replaces an enzyme missing from the involved skin. Finally we
stimulate the pigment cells with a Photomedex XTRAC Excimer Laser. This
narrow band ultraviolet or
UVB laser remarkably brings the color back to the skin, with the above
program, in the large majority of patients. It does this will avoiding
sunburn. The Photomedex XTRAC Excimer Laser is also effective in
treating psoriasis, alopecia areata, arthritis, some forms of dermatitis,
white scars due to loss in pigmentation, light stretch marks with pigment
loss. The laser can not be used in those sensitive to light such as lupus
patients.
For more extensive involvement we have a light box that can deliver full
body PUVA or narrow band UVB.
